Adopt-A-Road Program

Roadside litter, left unchecked, becomes more than an eyesore. It begins to erode the value of the surrounding area. Like a magnet, litter draws more litter until an area becomes blighted by people who do not properly dispose of trash. Litter reduction is a positive action that each of us can do.

Volunteers in KWPB’s Adopt-A-Road program work to show our community that each of us can reduce litter and make our county a better place to live.

KWPB’s Adopt-A-Road program offers businesses, civic groups, school groups, places of worship, families and individuals the opportunity to adopt a minimum one mile section of county-maintained roadside for the purpose of litter reduction. Teams make a commitment to remove litter along their adopted area at least six times a year. KWPB will provide safety vests, trash bags, and pick-up sticks. Teams determine the cleanup schedule based on their availability and preference. Make a commitment to get involved today.

If you or your organization would like to help us with a roadside cleanup please call the office at 407-599-3364

Litter Index Survey

Each summer, Keep Winter Park Beautiful volunteers set out on a day-long adventure to gauge the amount of litter in Winter Park. Known as the “The Litter Index”, the survey helps Keep America affiliates across the country determine which areas in their communities are in need of improved litter removal.

The Keep America Beautiful Litter Index makes litter prevention easier. It is a credible and simple tool that allows quick and reliable visual assessment of the types of litter present in your community. The data obtained through the Litter Index is invaluable in determining the types of community improvement programs needed to address current conditions, and achieve long-term sustainable results.

The Litter Index is designed to measure progress over time. It helps identify what is effective—and what isn't—in positively changing littering attitudes and behaviors and related community improvement issues.

School Recycling Program

School recycling programs are essential to creating community norms for recycling. Setting one up takes planning to build partnerships, establish long-term collection plans and identify key benefits to the individual school or organization. Relying solely on one motivated teacher, staff member or volunteer to handle the collection of materials does not always lead to a consistent program from one year to the next. However, motivating those in-house allies to help the program run smoothly is an excellent partnership!

Keep Winter Park Beautiful wants to partner with local schools or civic organizations to take ownership of their community environment. Schools and Civil groups are encouraged to apply for our School Recycling Program. Organizations may receive funds, supplies and resource assistance for the implementation of simple, sustainable recycling programs.

Phonebook Recycling

During the months of December, January & February Keep Winter Park Beautiful and the Winter Park Fire-Rescue Department (WPFD) established phone book drop-off locations in an effort to maintain a green community. This recycling initiative serves as continued commitment to the resolution that was adopted by the City Commission in 2008 to become a green local government. Residents and businesses without curbside recycling are encouraged to drop off their old or unused phone books at City Hall or any WPFD location.

Residents with curbside recycling can drop off their old or unused phone books in their recycling bins throughout the year. KWPB encourages participation in the curbside recycling program, which includes newspaper, aluminum and steel cans, plastic bottles and glass containers.
